Baba Ali on Islam Channel's Saturday Live Show Tonight!

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Raheem,

Alhamdulillah, the Ummah Films event went well yesterday with a packed audience at Imperial College. This was the largest Ummah Films audience I have seen yet and it was very exciting meeting new Muslims. I have a great time Alhamdulillah. The event was filmed by Islam Channel and will be broadcast on their station in the near future InshAllah.

I was invited by Islam Channel to come to their new Saturday Night Live show tonight. The show will be broadcast live so if you're in the UK, be sure to tune in InshAllah.

I am new to the Ummah films wave. alhamdulullah the videos are very funny. My only question is would this be dawa or comedy? Everyone says funny funny funny but is anyone learning. I went to Ali & mahdi's myspoace pages and there are unconvered women there (more on mahdi site but still the same). Mayb the next step is to have women respect the site by posting decent pics. But this would depend on my 1st question: dawa or comedy???

“If you ask them (about this), they declare: ‘We were only talking idly and joking.’ Say: ‘Was it at Allaah, and His Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger that you were mocking?’

Make no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed…”

[al-Tawbah 9:65-66]

“Verily, this (the Qur’aan) is the Word that separates (the truth from falsehood, and commands strict laws for mankind to cut the roots of evil).

And it is not a thing for amusement”[al-Taariq 86:13-14]

“And when he learns something of Our Verses (this Qur’aan), he makes them a jest. For such there will be a humiliating torment

[al-Jaathiyah 45:9]

“And it will be said: ‘This Day We will forget you as you forgot the Meeting of this Day of yours. And your abode is the Fire, and there is none to help you.’

This, because you took the Revelations of Allaah (this Qur’aan) in mockery, and the life of the world deceived you. So this Day, they shall not be taken out from there (Hell), nor shall they be returned to the worldly life (so that they repent to Allaah, and beg His Pardon for their sins)”

[al-Jaathiyah 45:34-35]

Al-Qaadi ‘Iyaad (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Sharh al-Shifaa’ (2/549): “Know that whoever belittles the Qur’aan or the Mus-haf, or any part thereof, or insults them, or denies it, or even one letter or aayah thereof, or disbelieves in it or in any part thereof or in anything that is clearly stated therein, whether it be a ruling or a story, or he knowingly affirms something that is denied therein, or denies something that is affirmed therein, or he doubts any of that, then he is a kaafir according to the scholars, by consensus. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

‘And verily, it is an honourable well‑fortified respected Book (because it is Allaah’s Speech, and He has protected it from corruption).

Falsehood cannot come to it from before it or behind it, (it is) sent down by the All‑Wise, Worthy of all praise (Allaah)’

[Fussilat 41:41-42].”

Assalamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah,

It is always good to hear reminders from Al-Quran al-kareem; but what exactly was the intent behind this reminder? I cannot help but feel that you are implying that brother Ali is mocking Islam through the Reminder series.

If you had any understanding of the these videos, you would realize that they do not, for one moment, make fun of any aspect of Islam. In fact, they do the complete opposite! Brother Ali is making fun of those people who mock Islam with their weird actions, that contradict the Qur'an & Sunnah!

Those ayahs that you quote, are addressed to the kaafirs & hypocrites who did not take Islam seriously. Those who mocked the believers for their belief, and who used to hire musicians & storytellers to distract the people away from hearing the recitation of the glorious Qur'an.

Show me one place where brother Ali does this. He is calling to Islam, not mocking it!

Perhaps you are worried by the fact that these lessons have some entertainment value, which is allowed, in moderation, in Islam. There are many examples of where the Prophet (sallahu 'alayhi wa salam) & the Sahabah (radiallahu anhumah) told jokes and stories to one another to amuse themselves. The thing to note was that the Prophet (sallahu 'alayhi wa salam) never lied when he joked - but he did joke.

Have you never attended a seminar where the Sheikh/Imam relayed a joke during his sermon, in order to keep the attention of the congregation? I have seen this many times. Brother Ali is simply expanding on this idea. He is making fun of actions that Muslims do, that they should not do, so they understand that what they are doing is wrong. And it works! The testimonies on this site prove it, as do the many reversions that have taken place. Alhamdulillah, all guidance is from Allah!

So please be careful when you use ayahs revealed for the kaafirs & hypocrites, against respectable Muslim brothers & sisters.

All truth & knowledge is from Allah. If anything i have said is incorrect, it is from me, and/or the accursed Shaytaan.

Wa'salam

Ali is NOT making fun of Islam. On the other hand his popularity may be in part that he does not actually talk about Islam but just some adab stuff. The Muslims are in a terrible state...So they like to laugh their sorrows away.

Alis videos do not invite people to Islam. None of his videos I have seen explained the shahadah. or anything. These are "be GOOD Muslim vodeos". Not "BE Muslim videos". I fear for the people that become Muslim because Ali is funny.

As a reminder, the video series is called THE REMINDER. It isn't called THE DAWAH which invites people to Islam but rather the video series is Nasiha (to give advise) or Dhikra (a reminder).

Hijabi,

Assalam alaykum!

I have known some people to say that they became Muslim after watching the Passion of the Christ - so is that movie Dawah? No.

Somethings could just be the catalyst at which they decide to learn more about Islam. Ali has a likeable personality and is very friendly, so maybe by showing that Muslims aren't all scary like some aspects of the media portray, it makes someone want to learn more.

These videos are nasihah and reminders towards Muslims.

HappyHijabi (cool name, mashallah) is correct. By showing that Muslims are HUMAN, i.e., that we are capable of more than finger-pointing and criticizing the West, Brother Ali is softening the hearts of those non-Muslims who may previously had doubts about Islam.

The revert sister, who spoke during the Q&A session at last Friday's event, said that she was inspired by Ali's videos to read more about Islam - after doing more research, she accepted it. Allahu akbar! Why feel sorry for her? That is a very strange thing to say. I feel happy for all reverts, no matter what path Allah chose for them.

At the event, Ali stressed that his intention for the Reminder series was to advise the Muslims on how to be good Muslims. ADVICE THAT WE NEED. He never even thought that non-Muslims would watch, which is why he never explains Islamic principles. However, 30% of the e-mails he receives regarding the Reminder series, are from non-Muslims, and only a tiny fraction of those are negative. Considering the volume of e-mails that he receives, that's a lot of happy non-Muslims! Mashallah.

Hijabi, if you aren't satisfied with things, why don't you create your own dawah-orientated video series on YouTube? If you don't want to get up in front of the camera yourself, hire your brother/other mahram. The opportunity is there for the taking.

I'm sure Ali will take your comments seriously, and perhaps incorporate more dawah in his future videos. However, there are many, many, MANY websites, books, lectures & street da'ees doing this job already - how many people are doing what Ali does? Not many. His services were needed by the Muslim community, and that is why, through the Grace of Allah, he has become so popular.

May Allah accept all our efforts to please Him, and keep us steadfast upon His Deen.

Wa'salam

P.S.,"On the other hand his popularity may be in part that he does not actually talk about Islam but just some adab stuff."

Adaab is a serious matter, sister.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) neither talked in an insulting manner nor did he ever speak evil intentionally. He used to say, "The most beloved to me amongst you is the one who has the best character and manners." (Al-Bukhari, Book #57, Hadith #104)

In another hadith in Bukhari, the wording goes: "The best of you...".

Narrated AbuHurayrah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The most perfect believer in respect of faith is he who is best of them in manners. (Abu Dawood, Book #40, Hadith #4665)

So, any efforts to improve the adaab of the Ummah, is praiseworthy, and essential work.

"So why would a person claim to become Muslim from a "reminder"...Humm??? I think I just originated a thought. HeHe!
Hijabi"

Sister Hijabi, the Prophet (peace be upon him) couldn't convert people so how could Ali. His videos isn't about converting people but rather reminding all of us about certain aspects of Islam. Also, it sounds like you have watched only one video when you said he only talks about adab. Watch the rest of the videos and you'll notice that a wide range of topics are covered. To answer you question about converting, many people come to Islam in different ways. Not everyone is handed a Qur'an and accepts Islam. Sometimes certain events occur where you find yourself thinking about life and you come across someone's actions that catches your attention. I don't understand what is bothering you so much?? because people have accepted Islam after watching a video that was meant for Muslims? Because the videos are nasiyah? The funny thing with all of your comments is that you're judging him but what about looking at yourself first.

Asalam alaikum,

I agree and let me add this, the Prophet SAW has said: "Whoever guides [another] to a good deed will get a reward similar to the one who performs it." [Saheeh Muslim]

Also, "By Allah, if Allah were to guide one man through you it would be better for you than the best type of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

Asalam aliakum,

If you watch all his videos inshallah, you will notice that at the end of each video there are post from Quran and Sunnah.

Brother Ali is not just using the humor for the sake of humor, but to remind ourselves and takes the nasiha and think about them.

By posting the ayah or hadith, he is telling to go back and read the Quran and Sunnah.

Abdullah Ibn Masud (R) related that the Prophet (S) said: "Verily, the Qur’an is the food from Allah, so come closer to it if you are able. Verily, the Qur’an is the rope of Allah, bright light, good medicine, and a guide for those who hold on to it. When he strays, the Qur’an will remind him of the path; and when he is misguided, the Qur’an will correct him. Its miracle lasts forever, and will not be reduced by rejection. Read the Qur’an. Allah will reward each word of your reading tenfold...." [Narrated by al-Hakim]

Asalam alaykum wa rahamtullah,

Inshallah we all will benefit from this. Let me put it clearly, THE REMINDER videos are not DAWAH videos, they are REMINDER videos or NASEEHAH videos, to understand the difference between the two, let’s start with Daw’ah.

What is Daw’ah? In Arabic language Daw’ah means to invite.

The Islamic definition or more clearly in the Shariah definition (according to the Quran and Sunnah) means to invite or propagate non-Muslims to Islam.

"Invite to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided." Surah 16:125

Since Ummahfilms is not a Daw’ah group, the Daw’ah can not be accomplished without a group that works solely for this cause.

"Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islam), enjoining al-ma`roof [i.e. Islam orders one to do] and forbidding al-Munkar [i.e Islam has forbidden]. And it is they who are successful." Surah 3:104

Now let’s start with the definition of Naseeha. In Arabic language it means to give advice.
The Islamic definition means to give sincere advice that follows with virtues, teaching and remindings from Quran and Sunnah.

'This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed my favor upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. Sura 5:4

“The religion is naseehah." The people asked, "To whom?" The Prophet saw replied, "To Allah and to His Book and to His Messenger and to the leaders of the Muslims and the common folk." (Bukhari, Muslim)

Giving Naseehah is a way to build relationship with Muslims.

Umar ibn Abdul-Aziz said, "The one who grants naseehah to his brother in matters of this his religion and concerns himself with mending affairs of this life; then, he has granted an excellent gift and fulfilled a wajib that was due on him ..."

In conclusion:
"Ummah Films is a Muslim film company that strives to provide Halaal (Islamically permissible) entertainment to Muslims and non-Muslims alike". The reminder videos are part of the projects from Ummahfilms.

If I said anything wrong then that is from me and if I spoke the truth then that is from Allah subhanahu wa ta3ala. If I made any mistakes, in quoting the ayaht and ahadith or even the explanations, please correct me.

Jazakum Allah wa salam alaikum wa rahmatullah.

Your Bro in Islam

Could everyone stop the very thinly veiled criticism? Brother Ali has done a FANTASTIC job in reminding muslims how to behave. Yes it is done with a sense of humour (shock horror!) but we are allowed to laugh and there is nothing mocking about the way he does it. His sites have had over half a million viewers and if these messages are changing even half these people then that is absolutely amazig.

This is one example of an islamic web site that is an absolute hite amongst muslims and non-muslims and people should just stop a second to appreciate that instead of starting to debate about the pros and cons of every minor thing! (Sorry, will get off my soapbox now).

At March 27, 2007 7:38 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Shukran everyone for all the advice. Now I understand. I was only saying that if Ali can be called for marriage counseling, invited around the world to crack people up, (mashallah) have nearly 200,000 hits, he could do a greater good by raising the intellect of his audience (now that he commands a large audience) to not only "act" as Muslims but "think" as Muslims as well. I saw yesterday some usama videos on one of Alis links (dawahworks). This video had nothing to do with dawa, but as i viewed more videos, I saw that some of them made me think how poor people are targeted or how our umma is targeted by shiqaq (division). I went back & even that stupid usamah video made me reflect (the second time). I geuss its just me...my favorite of Ali is "who hijaked my religion". I would like to see more of that inshallah. Salam alicum

Assalammu' Alaikum,

There use to be a few links on the Ummah Films blog to other websites and I removed all of them to prevent any confusion.

Since, I do not control what other websites do nor say, I think it is best not to link Ummah Films to other websites. At the end of the day, we will each be accountable for our own actions.

As salaamu alaikum to the anonymous "brother in Islam",

Naseeha is da`wah. When you give Naseeha, you are inviting to something in Islam, therefore, you are doing da`wah.

If I tell a person to not be arrogant because the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah says so, I am inviting them to follow what Islam teaches, therefore, I am doing da`wah.

To say that Naseeha is not da`wah is ridiculous.

Its dishearting to find people who criticise Br Ali's Reminders...we live in an age where people always nit pick and criticise and 'preach' to people.Br Ali is only trying to give a naseeha in a way which the youth of today understand! If you dont like it go elswhere, and stop wasting blog space!Btw,that young man who ran to the stage asking Br Ali to sign his Wudu Mate, you should be ashamed of yourself!I sat in front of you and your freinds were daring you to do that and you did.If you actaully watched Br Ali's Reminders you would have known he doesnt sign.& to sign a Wudu Mate that you go to the toliet and wash yourself with?!...All i have to say Astaghfirulah.Br Ali I was honoured to see you at Imperial College,to see you as a regular guy with no airs and graces(and no entourage as most speakers have these days.)I hope that you continue your Dawah and may Allah reward you with Hanasath.Your sister in Islam.M.

Wow! Hijabi, I'm glad you're not blowing up DawahWorks. Lol!
It was a great blessing for Uf to list DW as a link. After all it was Ali that inspired us to launch DW. As Du'at (dawah carriers) we are constantly seeking new ways to initiate thought about man, life & universe... what came before this life, what is to follow & how all of this relates to the here-and-now.
In a recent conversation, a sister was stating that some christians are better than some Muslims... I added that 'yes often we will find some xtians having better characters than some Muslims, but we have better Aqeedah (concepts) always'.
We seek solutions for the Ummah's ills. Step 1: Raise the thinking through public opinion... May Allah (swT) aid us in this effort. Ameen!
I'm Looking forward to seeing the SNL interview.

I think that the underlying issue is that the Muslims are in a sad condition and that while there are tons and tons of books by actual people who have spent their entire lives studying Islam (i.e. the Scholars), instead of reading them the Muslims would rather just click on their internet and be 'reminded' about how they should be via entertainment.

And perhaps that is even more the root of the issue, that being that the Muslims don't want to be educated, they want to be entertained.

Like it was mentioned in previous statements, why does Ali get invited to speak at a conference and all of a sudden the conference sells out, and I am pretty sure that if a major or even minor scholar was invited to the same conference people wouldn't even blink an eye. When you think about it like this, it just shows the pitiful state that the Muslims are in right now.

Please don't take this as an offense, I am just pointing out another view point than what the typical Ali groupie has to say.

The Reminder videos are nice, but I would never go to a conference just because Ali is there (which seems like the reason tons of people have gone to the conferences that Ummah Films has been to lately).

Just something to think about.

Salam

Its funny how everyone is a critic these day huh? Br. Ali made some videos that make people think and instead of commenting on the message of the videos, people want to tell him what to do. you people are hilarious

The bro ain't doing it for money or fame and if you have met the guy, you'll know that. Anytime anyone tries anything different people want to bash him or her or anyone that benefits from that person. You know what I say: As long as its halal, more power to ya bro. Don't listen to the people who just sit around and talk about what YOU should do. I really wonder what these people are doing themselves.

TO BROTHER ALI: Keep doing what you are doing! If people are benifiting from it, then DO IT!

TO THE PEOPLE THAT JUST DON'T GET IT: There are a hundred and one sites out there people. Why are you people here if you don't like it? All you goto do is type www.google.com in your address bar and surf elsewhere on the net. Just STOP COMPLAINING!

Subhan Allah (most high)!
I have not been Muslim long but I had the benefit of attending a class that was about correcting people of knowledge. I dont know if Ali is a shaykh but even if he was, he would not be beyond correction. People like mos def squander there fame by acting like kafirs. Ali is doing a good. And now that he is "famous" i was only advising him to step it up. I never stopped to think that maybe he is teaching what he knows & doesnt have the education to do beyond the reminders. I respect that greatly. Muhammad saw said to teach of islam what you know even if it is one verse.
I like his videos (who hijaked islam) is my favorite, I was just giving my view which is allowed in islam.
Islam gave women rights over a thousand years ago.
