Why all the parodies?

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Raheem,

If you walk down any bazaar at an Islamic event, one thing you are very likely to see is Parodies. Honestly, if you saw a song called "Oh Mahood had a farm" with the exact same melody as "Old MacDonald had a farm" would you really be surprised these days? Unfortunately, not because copy & paste thing has become way too common. I don't understand why so many companies parody their products based on mainstream stuff instead of trying to think outside the box and come up with something original. I mean they just don't copy it but they copy it almost exactly and change just one small thing so it has a Islamic feel to it...but that's about it.

Now, I don't see anything wrong with copying a concept or technique and changing it but you have change it enough so it doesn't look like cheap knock off. If you like the concept of late night talk show, do something like that but with your own flavor to it. In other words, a talk show is a standard concept and each talk show has teir own style which makes them unique. On the other hand, copying the idea of Survivor and doing the exact same show with the same rules and same setup and calling it "Muslim Survior" is just plain chessy. But, if you take the concept of a reality show and people on a Island with different rules and maybe changing up some stuff to make it different enough so it doesn't look like a cheap imitation, then maybe that would work. There are so many talented and creative brothers/sisters out there so there is no reason why we can't come up with original ideas InshAllah. Do you know what I'm sayin'

Assalamu Alaikum Ali,
I agree about non-talents trying to "Islami-size" ie, trying to SIZE everything into ISLAM, major cheesy if you ask me.
I think its a conspiracy supported by KRAFT, since it's the cheesiest! (which may contain pork enzyme, HarrrraaaaaaaM !!)

I think they should just take a general idea of what many watch and make up their own shows ans movies and songs. Ie if they see power rangers mabey they could show some islamically attired students at a colledge or something, that work in a non violent way to solve problems others face. IMO the power rangers are way too violent so therefore my daughter will not watch them!! I say if they are going to try and islam-o-size every reality show, then they shouls at least try and come up with their own content, i owuld not mind seeing an islamic version of cops done showing the actual burkha police in the middle east and with a different song all together!! There is no crime in makeing an islamic version so long as the ideas for the content are your own and not cut and paste!!

Assalammu' Alaikum,

Why can't we just come up with our own original ideas? (instead of copying everything)

Salam,
At one of the RIS [Reviving the Islamic Spirit] conferences one of the speakers made a joke:

a man walks into a brain store and he sees the following:
a Japenese brain for $2000
a American brain for $4000
a Muslim brain for one million $$

he asked the manager why the muslim brain cost more and he said:
"b/c its un-used"

okay thts not tht funny but it was wen the speaker told it :D like this article the parodies.. i guess we dont think hard enough..

Salam,
Hira

Not just the bazaars at Islamic conventions are reflective of a lack of any serious original thinking, actually this can be taken as an indication of the behavior and modus operandi of the organizations hosting these conferences. Many if not most of them have no original ideas or thoughts and like the cheap knockoffs in the bazaar, simply rehash whatever it is the media or popular culture is embracing and then repackage it with arabic phrases ('Islamicizing' it) and then package it as candy (via "sheikhs") and distribute it to the masses. This after all was the exact process deployed when groups such as ISNA, CAIR, et al endorsed Bush for president in 2000 and look how that turned out?
