Backbiting

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Raheem,

"O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion, in deeds some suspicions are sins. And spy not neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah, verily, Allah is the one who accepts repentance, Most Merciful" (Al-Hujuraat 49: 12)

It's a commercial aired in the Middle East reminding what the Quran has said about gossiping about others behind their back.

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Raheem,

Video Blog #9: Who Hijacked my Religion?!?

I turn on the TV and I'm amazed the type of characters they have explaining my religion to the masses. No wonder the world is confused about Islam.

Supporting Ummah Films

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Raheem,

After getting enough requests, I decided to make the Ummah Films t-shirts. I went with the design that everyone voted on in the blog. Alhamdulillah they arrived this weekend and I got both t-shirts and long sleeves in sizes L , XL, and XXL.

The videos have been watched by 85,000+ viewers, Alhamdulillah. SubhanAllah, I had no idea on the amount of responses and positive emails I would be getting from viewers from around the world. JazakAllah khair for all your inspiring comments and emails.

I was very surprised to see that a lot of non-Muslims watch the show. I was even more surprised when I read the number of positive emails that came from non-Muslims. Since 9/11, the media has really put out a negative stereotype on Muslims and Islam and it was refreshing to hear that there are many non-Muslims out there who don't just blindly follow whatever garbage the media dishes.

These videos have been really spreading via word of mouth so I would like to thank everyone for letting others know about them. I really want to message to get out to as many viewers as possible so I have decided to drop the price on all the shirts, long sleeve or t-shirt, all sizes including XXL2, to $10. Yes, $10! I haven't found any other shirts on the net with that price especially long sleeve or shirts in XXL (which usually cost more)

After getting enough requests, I decided to make the Ummah Films t-shirts. I went with the design that everyone voted on in the blog. Alhamdulillah.

Please support Ummah Films
(broken link fixed!)
JazakAllah khair

Video Blog #8: Parental Advisory - Culture vs. Islam

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Raheem,

Parental Advisory - Culture vs Islam

This week's episode is about how some parents love their culture so much that even if it conflict with Islam, they will continue to practice it.

How can we complain about the situation of the Muslims if we love this dunya more than we love Allah (swt)?

We can't.

T-shirts & the next video blog

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Raheem,

JazakAllah khair for everyone's feedback on the shirts. We decided to go with the 2nd design based on everyone's vote

As it was suggested, the space between the words were also eliminated. We are using white text to print on these black shirts. A total of 72 shirts will be printed InshAllah. The short sleeve t-shirts will be $12 and the long sleeve shirts will be $15 (yes, sisters we're getting long sleeve shirts per your request). Please support Ummah Films by buying and wearing the shirt. JazakAllah kair. The shirts will go on sale this Friday InshAllah on www.ummahfilms.com.

By the way, I think this week's topic is going to be a little hard to swallow for some people. I doubt it will win me any points with some of the viewers, but then again I'm not doing these video blogs to win a popularity contest. I plan to keep it real just like I have been with all the video thus far InshAllah and not compromise my words. It may be our lowest rated video but as long as the message gets across, its all good with me.

Often many important issues are swept under the rug because no one wants to talk about them.

Some things neeed to be said...and this Friday they will be said InshAllah.

The topic will deal with culture and parents.

your brother in Islam,

Ali
p.s. If you sent me an email I have not responded...please forgive me. I will try to catch up with the emails by tomorrow InshAllah.

Video Blog #6 - Distractions During Salat

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Raheem,

Sometimes concentrating on the Salat (prayer) isn't easy. You assume that Shaitan is going to distract you but it becomes even harder to focus when the person praying next to you is distracting you.

Vlog #8: To be announced! (your video coming soon)

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Raheem,

Ok here is your chance to participate in an Ummah Films video blog. This time the pen is in your hands. You guys put the content together and I'll film it and post it right here on Ummah Films InshAllah.

To be consistent, we'll try to keep all the comments related to this on this post. If want to make this work, this is what we have to do:

1. Suggest a topic by posting your idea in the comment section
2. A topic will be decided
3. People will post what lines I will say on that topic (basically you'll be writing my script)
4. The moderator(s) (Thinking Brother & Aisha) can edit the main post which will have the current draft of the script. There needs to be some time of order and sorry not all content is going to be make it.

**For camera angles, we'll need a standard protocol so I know where to be:

ECU: Extreme Close Up
CU: Close Up
MS: Medium Shot
SS: Side Shot
FS: Full Shot

Anyone can participate.

Let keep it at between 400 to 700 words

Deadline: 7/17/06

The current draft will be below this line:

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Raheem,

We have been thinking about selling Ummah Films T-Shirts (about $12) to help market the site, InshAllah. In order to keep our costs down, we need to go with one design. Which design do you like best?

Comedy Video Blogs

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Raheem,

I started the Muslim Video Blog series because almost everyone else from Ummah Films was working our first short film, Tomorrow Never Comes. My role in that film was the writer/editor but since the filming of the movie took longer than was originally projected, I wanted to practice my editing skills before I got rusty. I started looking for something simple and easy to film so I can have footage to edit on a consistent basis.

Instead of recording just random video clips for editing, I figured why not record something that may be beneficial for those who watch it InshAllah. Something that has a positive message, which would be a good reminder for others and myself. I tried to google the net to see who other Muslim Video Bloggers have done, and I didn't find any Muslim Video Bloggers. So I turned on my camera, sat in my chair, and spoke to the lens with my thoughts and ideas. Seriously, I wasn't sure if anyone would watch the clips, maybe just a few friends.

What is the point of spending time making a video for an audience if no one is going to watch it? The idea was to make it entertaining so people would watch it and maybe even pass it around to others. At the same time, I didn't want to mock Islam like many of the other videos (by Muslims) on the net. I wanted to try something different and unique so I started to check out what some non-Muslim video bloggers have done. The only style (quick cutting between camera angles) that caught my interest was zefrank so I borrowed the technique from him. Unlike his blog of discusses mostly left-wing politics which is designed for his type of audience, I wanted to provide topics that Muslims can relate to since I figured most of my audience would be Muslims. I didn't want to repeat the topics that we all have heard a million and one times so I decided to start off with more of the informal topics, the kinda of issues that you may discuss when your just hanging out with your friends.

I think that is why people think the Video Blogs are funny. I guess comedians use the same technique. The talk about stuff people only "think" about but necessarily bring up in public. I'm not a comedian or an actor. I'm just a brother named Ali sitting in front of a camera thinking out loud. The $25,000 Muslim Marriage video is great example of thinking out loud. It talks about the stuff you think about (maybe sometimes discuss with friends), takes you through the typical wedding day from a guest's point of view, and then concludes with an alternative from the norm. I think the reason most people like that one the most is because almost everyone has been a "guest" in one of those type of weddings with similar ideas floating in their minds. I just brought the ideas into the surface and people laughed. But the idea wasn’t necessarily to make you laugh but more importantly to make you think about it InshAllah.

Many of us, just like myself, need reminders from time to time. As you know there are ton of Islamic books out there but most of them go unread. There are lectures going on all the time but only a fraction of people attend them. Combine that with the fact the majority of the audience having short attention spans (thanks to television), it can become very difficult time to sit through a 3hr lecture, especially if the topic is not relevant, and pay attention.

I figured if I was going to do this whole video thing, why not think outside the box and maybe make it entertaining. Of course, I can't always be funny but as long as it isn't boring, maybe people would watch....maybe people would benefit from it. If my goal was to try to outdo myself each time, it would be insane. There will always be people who like one show better than the next who will find the next show less appealing. For the record, I’m not a comedian or an actor. If the video comes out good, Alhamdulillah. If it annoys you and you dislike it or me but it still helped you by reminding you of doing more good deeds or less bad deeds, Alhamdulillah. I'm not looking for the popular award. I’m not even trying to get into the film industry or get fan base or anything like that. I'm just a normal brother trying to make videos that will be beneficial for those who watch it, including myself.

your brother in Islam,

Ali

Mecca to Medina - Practice commercial - Take 1

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Raheem,

I'm not the only one making videos with Ummah Films. There are others doing projects as well. RF7 is working on his upcoming short, Tomorrow Never Comes, which is about a brother who wakes up one day deaf. I think Sister Aurelia and Hootan are both working on commercial clips as well InshAllah.

Yesterday, Thinking Brother & Hani made a practice commercial for the Mecca to Medina** game. Please excuse the sound as were not aware of the problem until everything was already filmed. Since these clips are practice clips, it was more for the learning experience so they didn't reshoot the footage.

(click on the picture below to view the video clip)

**Mecca to Medina is the #1 Muslim game on the market right now Alhamdulillah. Its game based on negotitation and trade (skills that people from the middle east are usually good at) and can be played from 2 to 6 players. The game is very interactive and enjoyed by people from all over the world. Alhamdulillah. You learn more about it by going to www.muslimgames.com
