Baba Ali's Upcoming Movie

Bismillah ar-Rahmaan ar-Raheem,

On June 13th 2006, The Reminder series started and the production of 10 videos in 10 weeks was promised and fulfilled. Following the success of the 1st season, I completed 8 more videos for Season 2 and the audience has reached over 3.5 million viewers on YouTube alone. In Feb 2008, I promised 8 videos in 8 weeks for the new "Ask Baba Ali" series and so far a new video has been released (as promised) each Friday. I often get asked the question "so what's next?" And my answer is...

A Movie!

Yeah, a real movie InshAllah. By now, my viewers have a good sense of my work ethic, the ideas I carry, and my sense of humor. All I have had at my disposal is a camera, a few lights, and a chair and most of you have seen the impact Alhamdulillah. Now my goal is to put a Dream Team together and spearhead a film for the big screen. I figure you can either continue to protest and sign petitions about the way Muslims are portrayed in films or we can pick up a camera and show them an alternative.

Most of us can't afford making a film on our own but as a collective whole, I believe we can raise the money if we work together. All we can do is put in the effort and the rest is Allah (swt) hands. That is been what I have repeated many times for all my past projects and what I am repeating again for this project. If you want to be part of this effort, you can contribute using the widget below. JazakAllah Khair

My goal is to take everything to the next level InshAllah. Right now, I've been limited and doing short videos (5 to 8 min pieces) on YouTube. Although the results have been amazing (Alhamdulillah), I want to expand it and get our message across even a larger audience InshAllah.

Project like this can not be done alone and this is why I put up this post. If I get funding for this film, then I'll say Alhamdulillah (all Praise is due to Allah). If I don't, then I'll say MashAllah (Will of Allah)

Either way, I am content.

Just a question out of curiosity: Have you considered having other people in your weekly videos?

Also...is there a particular goal you have for the donation collection? Have you calculated the approx cost?

Walaikum Salam,

To answer your question, I usually film my videos in the middle of the night (which explains why I look tired sometimes) and logistically its easier filming videos by myself. Its also a challenge to find dependable people who are willing to put in the time and effort to put a consistent show together. This may be the reason behind the lack of consistent Muslim shows on the net.

As in regards of budget for the film, I'm trying to plan that out based on money that we gather for the project. I mean you can rent a camera for a few hundred dollars or one for a few thousand dollars and of course there is difference quality. I much rather produce a film with higher quality and not rely on just volunteer assistance but some things are out of my hands.

Hi Baba Ali,

I've been a fan of your reminder and Ask Baba Ali videos for a long time and have watched each one at least ten times!! Anyways, I have a question for you. How would you respond to this notion that films, acting, and getting into the character of another person kind of takes away from your true soul and spirituality? Like some actors act like so many different people that they forget who they really are and that lack of ground and oneness with the spiritual self causes so many problems in their life. Just like you said that Santa's not real, aren't these situations, characters, and the film world itself not real? (like all the special effects to create fantastical things that don't exist as well as people pretending to be someone else) I consider you as a role model and since you're into film making I would really like your opinion on this. Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

-Bhavna

In my videos, I don't really act but rather I just act like myself. I'm not really into making films that are not based on reality (i.e. character being an alien or anything like that) but rather my plan for this film is to do something that is realative and of course realistic.

I think the reason so many viewers have watched these videos is because they're based on reality. Ideally, I would like to lean more towards realities/documentaries.

I hope that answers your question. If not, I apologize. I'm more of a vocal person than a writing person so I apologize if I wasn't clear.
:)

Ali

I was actually referring to movies and just wanted to know what you thought of actors in movies in general (your videos are of course you being you, and very realistic)... I think you answered my question that you want to make films more based on reality..

what do you think of actors in general (not the "acting like yourself" thing) that is, according to Islamic belief? (I am not Muslim, so that's why I am wondering about this)

@Bhavana.

Why on earth would someone forget who they were by acting, unless possibly if they had schizophrenia lool

Anyway in islam, I think acting is only haraam if you are acting a haraam role, e.g. drinking alohol, eating pork etc

Insh'Allah your movie will have the funding. I think it is wonderful that you are trying so hard to get the message out about Islam. May Allah help you and be pleased with your effort and outcome.

Salam.

well it could be in a very literal sense or more subtle (that actors lose their sense of identity)..Basically actors act like different personalities with different lives, sometimes including lovers (even if there are no questionable lover scenes involved, you are still acting as if you are married or in love with someone else)... It's just that Baba Ali's comment about Santa made me think about this. I appreciate your comments, thank you :)

Yes, the movie I'm planning is a comedy. InshAllah it will be based on my sense of humor (as seen in my Reminder & Ask Baba Ali videos)

Salamz

how much your planning to raise $
do you have a budget? I know you said whatever money you can get. but you have to plan it. Like make a decision on how much you want to spend on camera rentals. Other costs and get a gustimate then add like 5%-10% for other charges that may come up and come up with the figure that way you have a goal of reaching x amount of $. This way the world knows and can help you out rather saying ohh he has enough raised
Just a suggestion
Peace

Mashallah Brother. Truly your honorable aspirations and your efforts towards Islam are pretty much unparalleled within most Muslim communities (primarily in the US & the Western world)--Alhamdulillah this is obvious in your huge popularity throughout Youtube (alone) and your very promising plans for the future Inshallah. You have my full support and be assured that I will donate as much as I am financially able and will try to spread the word as much as I can.

At a time when the perception of Peace & Islam (two conjoined concepts) is being rended apart (both in the media & and in politics) we should ALL be doing more than just signing petitions and attending rallies. We should all follow brother Ali's advice and act proactively towards this issue or very little (or worse...nothing) is going to change for our benefit.

Please inform us when you've got a ballpark figure for how much money you're planning to raise for the movie--as that usually helps.

ok we may act at points in our daily lives but.. to get paid for it, having it as a profession... that's different right? pretending for example that you are in love with someone else by acting ..and being paid for that.. then can we not allude this to women (or men) who get paid for sexual acts that also occur in daily life (but presumably on an accepted level- in married life).

Finally ! this must have been on the mind of many Muslims for years and nobody took any action to make it happen. The best way to reach people now is through sports, movies and music.

If you advertise this idea in the Arab world, you would definitely get professionals to donate their work to produce the movie. there are some top notch directors, cameramen, etc in Egypt (i'm sure in other Arab countries as well) who do such projects gratis. I know that the director and cast of the English Islamic video clips for Sami Youssef do them for free.

Go for it Ali Baba and Allah will guide you and make it happen ISA.Jazzak Allah kul Kheir.

Ya Allah!! This is amazing!
I am sooo glad someone is waking up and realising that screaming your head off in a march whenever Muslims are insulted by the non-Muslim world will have little or no impact nowadays!
SubhanAllah the idea of a film, a Muslim films, a REAL film that make it to the big screens has always been on my mind. I love acting and also love writing scripts and that's why the possibility of making a Muslim Film has always been on my mind but i've never been able to do anything about it because
a) I'm a sister
b) I don't have the necessary contacts to make it happen

So instead it's just been in my head, hoping that inshAllah when i am older and more independant i can perhaps do something about it.

But Alhamdulillah i'm so glad that you've had the courage and determination to do the best you can for Dawah. I respect you so much for that.
I make dua that this film becomes successful and inspires other people to produce more Muslim films, that protray Muslims in the good light. Ameen.
