Video Blog #9: Who Hijacked my Religion?!?

I turn on the TV and I'm amazed the type of characters they have explaining my religion to the masses. No wonder the world is confused about Islam.

I have to agree with anonymous (wait! which one?? apparently brother Moussa from Germany) ... when I saw the #9, I was like.. "WHAT! we're already on the 9th episode?!" SubhanAllah

It seems like you've kind of shifted your focus more acutely towards non-Muslim viewers in this one... and that's cool. Definately good to show non-Muslims, since it seems like that's whats happening anyways.

JazakAllahu Khairan for the vid, enlightening as always.

i enjoyed it SO MUCH! it's like u read my mind! u said EVERYTHIN that i feel, and said it PERFECTLY! its an eye opener for non-Muslims and for ignorant Muslims.

This man talks about ignorant Muslims: http://www.watchislam.com/.
There are actually Muslims that think that cuz ur not 'born' in2 it, ur just not Muslim :s

Islam is becoming more and more of a culture than a true religion.

Becuase like culture, Islam is beginning to be shifted and changed to suit everyone's desire!
Many extremists are saying things about Islam that is NOT true, because that's what they WANT to be true!

Anyways, I'm getting carried away with my thoughts once again.

I just wanted 2 personally thank u 4 a very enjoyable video!

So thanx tons, and may God bless and reward u inshallah!

Take Care

As-salaamu `alaikum Dear Fans and Visitors,

I just want to inform everyone here on the blog that the vlogs (video blogs) will be divided into seasons. As far as the text portion of the blog, that will be constantly updated insha' Allah with news and other pertinent information for our fans and general visitors.

Season One will wrap up with the 10th vlog and after that, we at Ummah Films will continue to work on other projects insha Allah such as short films and maybe even commercials.

Insha' Allah, Season Two will most likely arrive around November (that date is tentative) but we will definitely keep everyone posted.

While Season One will end next week, we will still keep the blog up to date with posts and even other videos.

So don't worry folks, insha' Allah, there will be plenty of stuff coming from Ummah Films in the future!

As-salaamu `alaikum,

DVD release? Hmmm, sounds like a good idea. We will see how it goes and gauge the demand for a DVD release.

We thought of DVD releases of course for our short films (that have yet to be released), but we will consider what you suggested insha Allah.

Absolutely fantastic! what more can i say, once again u did a fine job of clearing up some very popular misconceptions. InshAllah i'm going to try my level best to get some non-Muslims to watch your video blogs...i think they will be very beneficial for them, esp this one.

Only one more to go!!! :( guess all good things must come to an end. May Allah reward u for all that u have done, and may others take inspiration from u to spread Islam in the way it should be spread - through simple logic with a dash of humour :D

I have seen all your videos, and the most recent "Who hijacked my religion?" is something I could not bring myself to saying on my own. It's like God heard me, and brought it out by way of your movie.

I posted this on myspace. I also have you on youtube, so I will never have trouble finding you.

Maybe God bless you and guide you always.

Keep spreading your Da'wah.

PS: I just ordered a shirt. I'll help spread the word. It's about time someone spends time on something good, as oppose to all the nonsense I see on the interweb.

Assalam Alaikum Br. Ali,

Your video forces me to ask a question. I only ask this just to clarify your views on Jihad fe Sabeelillah.

My question is: Do you know the following hadith or the implications of this hadith?

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: I heard the Apostle of Allah, (sallallaahu `alayhi wa-sallam) say: “When you enter into the in a transaction, hold the tails of cows, are pleased with agriculture, and give up conducting Jihad fe Sabeelillah, Allah will make disgrace prevail over you, and will not withdraw it until you return to your original Deen (i.e., True Islam).” (Sunan Abu Dawud: Book 23, Number 3455)

I bring this up because Jihad fe Sabeelillah and Da'wah is our obligation. Not that I'm saying we should kill innocents, but nevertheless Muslim lands are invaded and innocent Muslims are being killed and raped.

Jazakullah Khair

Asalaam ualeikum!

Sadly I can only agree that the media always make sure to mention as long as its muslims involved in some stuff.:o(..
If we talk about suicide bombs, not many know that even christian palestinians do this they dont mention this on TV do they?Wonder why they seem to "forget" that..

Alhamdulillah Allah swt is all knowing and we are on the right path.So even if they show much nonsens about islam..islam is still growing...WOW!!.Just think about it..After the war in Afganistan lots of ppl became muslims cos they wanted to know the truth about islam..

So the ones who are trying to talk us down are digging their own grave..They make ppl want to know more about islam instead of the opposite.

I hope that in future there will be more muslims working with media and own newspapers all around the world inchaAllah.
To only complain wont take us far.Right? We need to do our best with the help of Allah swt.
Take good care all of you!

And thank you once again for a good reminder brother!

Really interesting video, but I will have to disagree with your understanding of Nationalism. There is nothing wrong with National Identity nor Regional Identity in Islam. Just look at the mere names of the Classical Scholars and people associated with Islam such as Hasan al-Basri (ra), Khatib al-Baghdadi, Imam al-Ghazzali, and so on. All their names mention a town or where they were from. There's a lot more you can read on the subject, so InshAllah you look into it.

JAK for all your efforts.

If you are thinking of putting a compliation together, maybe consider getting in contact with The Islamic Resource Center www.muslimtents.com/irc/index2.html

These good people are going out into the community and sharing Islam for educational purposes. They go to schools, churches, and other groups. Yes, many people find Islam after hearing the trained speaker, but the main purpose is to eradicate ignorance.

A joint effort with them could benefit both of your organizations. They could tell you what myths and issues get brought up and how to handle them. They could help you develop an educational video for their presentation. They could then show that video as part of their presentation. Enshahallah.

If you don't hook up with them, then please consider getting some Islamic organization to advise you and benefit from your efforts. Is there anyone currently?

So definitely getting someone up who knows the religion would make a difference to show the non muslims that were funny and peaceful and not terrorists. great vids! (as usual)

however, whats wrong with having non-Muslims talk about Islam if what they are saying is the truth and correct? (i.e. William Chittick, Karen Armstrong, John Esposito, etc.)?

Be careful what u say bro, ALOT of ppl listen to u!

and about nationalism i suggest u read this article:

At August 01, 2006 12:16 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

last post....who are you talking to?

At August 01, 2006 7:28 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nationalism is a concept alien to
Islam because it calls for unity based on family and tribalistic ties, whereas Islam binds people together on the `Aqeedah, that is belief in Allah (swt) and His Messenger (saaw). Islam calls for the ideological bond.

Grouping the Muslims on tribalistic lines is clearly forbidden. It is narrated by Abu Da'wud that the Messenger of Allah (saaw) said,

"He is not one of us who calls for `Asabiyyah,(nationalism/tribalism) or who fights for `Asabiyyah or who dies for `Asabiyyah."

And in another Hadith, the
Messenger of Allah (saaw) referring to nationalism, racism, and patriotism said:

"Leave it, it is rotten." [Muslim and Bukhari] and in the Hadith recorded in Mishkat al-Masabith, the Messenger of Allah (saaw) said,

"He who calls for `Asabiyyah is as if he bit his father's genitals"

Not only does Islam forbid people from grouping on nationalistic ties, but it also prohibits the establishment of more than one state, whether these states are based on nationalism or otherwise. The only state that is allowed
for the Muslims is the Islamic State, which is a state that is governed exclusively by Islam. Allah (swt) addressed the Messenger (saaw),

"And rule between them by that which Allah revealed to you, and do not follow their vain desires away from the truth which came to you" [Surah Al-Madinah (5): ayah 48]

"And rule between them by that which Allah revealed to you and do not follow their whims, and beware (be on the alert) that they may deviate you away from even some part of what Allah revealed to you." [Surah Al-Maidah (5):ayah 49]

Sister from an Island in South East Asia.

I am glad this wasnt an apologetic self bashing video.

Its frightening when you see Muslims presenting Islam as something completely unrecognisable and no different from the teachings of those who have strayed and incurred the wrath of Allah(swt).

Having said that, I also need to emphasise that too often, too many of us are not aware and knowledgable about the instruction on combatative jihad in Islam.
Sure, sufffice to say, it is a jihad overcome our nafs our weaknesses, etc, but surely it doesnt nullify the call for Jihad (i.e. Holy War).

"I am a Muslim, because it's a religion that teaches you an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. It teaches you to respect everybody, and treat everybody right. But it also teaches you if someone steps on your toe, chop off their foot. And I carry my religious axe with me all the time."
"There is nothing in our book, the Qur'an, that teaches us to suffer peacefully. Our religion teaches us to be intelligent. Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone lays a hand on you, send him to the cemetery."
`~Malcolm X.

[If Malcolm X said the above today, his "language" would have been deemed as that of "hatred" by all the freedom loving people of the world.]

Then again, this may not be an area you may be ready to explore.
Or perhaps those whom you intend to address may not have the capacity to digest any of this yet.

There are many of us, who are still at the infantile level in our Iman.

Your sincere efforts will be rewarded.
Looking foward to Season 2!

Assalamualaikum wr.wb.

Asalamu alaikum brother,

MashaAllah, I can really relate to this one, I think we all can.

Another thing that gets to me is how some people who want to know about Islam don't want to talk to good practising Muslims about it. I know people who have this attitude which is like "Well they're Muslim (or especially 'they converted to Islam') so they're bound to say good things about Islam"....duh! They know the truth! Its like if you're thinking about uni and studying medicine and you want to know what its really like being a doctor and what it involves...you go speak to a doctor or a med student! If you want to know what being a Muslim involves and you want to know about Islam, go speak to a good practising Muslim who knows a lot about Islam, don't go find some random website which likes to criticise the religion.

Anyway, rant over, jazakAllah for your vids, they get better and better :)

this was the first video i saw (on youtube) that got me addicted

i'm sure you've heard this plenty of times, but i'm "reminding you just in case you forgot"

y0u G0tZ MAdD PR0Pz D00d

lol no but really, your videos make me giggle & i like the fact that when you realized people were watching, you started concentrating on videos that are humorous but that also allow for moral reflection (i.e. the videos near the end that talk about setting a good example for the sake of Islam's reputation & ignoring distractions during prayer)

i'm one of most likely many that you have encouraged to become a better Muslim & i sincerely thank you for that

keep up the good work and hope to see more vids insha'Allah!!

I'm a white British atheist myself, and although I will admit I have relatively little understanding of your faith, I do have enough understanding to know that it is a religon which teaches basic morals that all people of any religon should hold dear. Furthermore I do have the utmost respect for it and find it apalling that the Media can so easily manipulate the majority of the population of my country.

Hope you keep up the good work trying to cure the growing problem of ignorance amongst many people today.

Coming from an evangelical Christian background, I get so frustrated with the news reports of the clinic bombers, or abusive fathers, or hateful protesters at rallies. They put these freaks on TV spouting about why they do what they do in the name of their whacked version of God. Yes ... I know what you're sayin'.

Mohammed, Jesus, Buddha - they were each trying to show us the way of PEACE. Truth has been hijacked throughout history to support the appetites of the power hungry.

It is up to us who value peace and truth to live as examples in spite of the lies propagated. This is a good work you do. I hope I say this correctly - Inshallah ... my brother.

Very good film. It's terrible that some people hijack a faith and twist it to their own agenda. Whether it be terrorist Muslims, Terrorist Christians or whatever terrorist group within a real religion. And the people who really follow that religion are the ones who suffer (and - obviously - the innocent people the terrorists hurt). It all builds a bad view of that religion. But maybe that's their intention. Who knows what these terrorists are thinking. But it's our religions that are suffering.

Greetings from a non-Muslim, former Christian, guy just trying to find my way. I loved your post. I like to hear different points of view and I'm glad to hear that there are Muslims out there trying to make a positive difference. "Lead by example" - that should go for all of us, personally and politically. Muslims leading by example will do more to stop terrorists than all the armies of the world can do.

First of all, I wanna say that your a good muslim because you stand up for Islam and explain to non-muslims what its really about and how other 'ignorant ppl' like the media, demonstrate islam in a negative way.. everything you say is true about the hijabs and jummah.. so funny.. I'm glad you converted.. Islam is the best religion in world! I hope you continue to make more videos, they're great! :D

P.S. have you heard of that Canadian show called .. Little Mosque on the Prarie.. if so.. please say something about it in ur vids. Because honestly, I think they are just making fun of us muslims. When I watched it few times, I got upset because what they show is wrong and offensive. .. to me in my opinion.. and the majority of the actors who are supposedly muslim in the show ..ARENT EVEN MUSLIMS!!..wats the point of portraying muslims in a canadian country if they know nothing about Islam!?!?!.. ' YOU KNOW WAT IM SAYIIIIIIIIIIIIN' ... lol ahaha .

Anyway. I want to say thanks again. Take and Salam from Toronoto!

I really can’t buy this person at all. He’s an Iranian who’s not suffered the atrocity those Iranian young boys and girls have suffered and are suffering, having lived his life in America!
That is why he can praise Islam because he has no idea how it feels living under Islamic subjugation as a young person!
If he had had lived his life in Iran, I swear to God or Allah if you prefer as someone who’s been brain-washed by Arabic Culture and not by Real Islam because Arabs are a racist and arrogant nation and their arrogance has been blamed by God even in Koran. That’s why they insist to impose their language and culture to the whole world in the name of Islam whereas according to the real Islamic ideology, Islam is a global religion therefore, you don’t have to become an Arab in order to become a Muslim. You can keep your cultural appearance, name etc. and still be a Muslim but NO… They insist you have to grow a beard right after conversion, choose an “Arabic” name NOT “Islamic Name” because there is no such thing as Islamic Name being Islam a global religion and learn Arabic because you wouldn’t be a Muslim if you don’t pray to God or the Arabic God, Allah, if you don’t speak to him in Arabic! Apparently, God is an Arab and would not understand any language other than Arabic!
This person on the other hand has suffered some frustration in America which is not very hard to see what his frustrations has been! How can I see that?! It’s easy! He’s playing cool, funny, open-minded, even trying to be somewhat sexy! Where has he learned all these things?! To his admission, he’s been hanging out with white Americans and has been drinking, clubbing, chasing girls etc. He obviously has not been received well to his liking and has been disappointed and that’s why he’s become a Islam Lover. He’s fighting back! I think this guy’s so called activities are based on sheer selfish motive; therefore I cannot buy it or hoopla for it!
